Hunter S. Thompson's The Rum Diary
I thought this was a sequel to Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas but this is apparently a work of fiction and Johnny Depp's character is named Paul Kemp
“Corporations are getting better and better at seducing us into thinking the way they think—of profits as the telos and responsibility as something to be enshrined in symbol and evaded in reality. Cleverness as opposed to wisdom. Wanting and having instead of thinking and making. We cannot stop it. I suspect what’ll happen is that there will be some sort of disaster—depression, hyperinflation—and then it’ll be showtime: We’ll either wake up and retake our freedom or we’ll fall apart utterly. Like Rome—conqueror of its own people.”

7 Largerst Military Budgets in the World
I mean, even if the idea was that we're "fighting the good fight" at a certain point doesn't self preservation become an issue? No shit the economy is fucked LOOK AT THIS
in other news. Military spending by GDP is 4.7% here. on this list Russia comes in second at 4.3%. Japan is at 1% and Germany is 1.4%.
...
Worldwide, however is a different story.
Topping this list at an insane 20.9% of GROSS DOMESTIC PRODUCT..
Eritrea.
awesome
I mean, Saudi Arabia is the only other country above 10%, that's just silly. look how blue it is.

"It seems to me that the intellectualization and aestheticizing of principles and values in this country is one of the things that’s gutted our generation. All the things that my parents said to me, like “It’s really important not to lie.” OK, check, got it. I nod at that but I really don’t feel it. Until I get to be about 30 and I realize that if I lie to you, I also can’t trust you. I feel that I’m in pain, I’m nervous, I’m lonely and I can’t figure out why. Then I realize, “Oh, perhaps the way to deal with this is really not to lie.” The idea that something so simple and, really, so aesthetically uninteresting — which for me meant you pass over it for the interesting, complex stuff — can actually be nourishing in a way that arch, meta, ironic, pomo stuff can’t, that seems to me to be important. That seems to me like something our generation needs to feel."

"i run out of ideas every day.
each day i live with the mortal fear that i've used up the last idea that'll ever come to me.
if you dont want to run out of ideas, the best thing to do is not to excecute them.
you can tell yourself that you don't have the time or resources to do them right.
then they stay around in your head like brain crack.
no matter how bad things get at least you have those good ideas that you'll get to later.
some people get addicted to that brain crack.
and the longer they wait the more they convince themselves of how perfectly that idea should be excecuted.
and they imagine it on a beautiful platter with glitter and rose petals,
and everyone's clapping for them.
but the bummer is most ideas kinda suck when you do them,
and no matter how much you plan you still have to do something for the first time,
and youre almost guaranteed the first time you do something, it'll blow.
but somebody who does something bad three times still has 3 times the experience of that other person
who's still dreaming of all the applause.
when i get an idea, even a bad one, i try to get it out into the world as fast as possible,
cause i certainly don't want to be addicted to brain crack."

Stop Coddling the Super-Rich
by Warren Buffett
OUR leaders have asked for “shared sacrifice.” But when they did the asking, they spared me. I checked with my mega-rich friends to learn what pain they were expecting. They, too, were left untouched.
While the poor and middle class fight for us in Afghanistan, and while most Americans struggle to make ends meet, we mega-rich continue to get our extraordinary tax breaks. Some of us are investment managers who earn billions from our daily labors but are allowed to classify our income as “carried interest,” thereby getting a bargain 15 percent tax rate. Others own stock index futures for 10 minutes and have 60 percent of their gain taxed at 15 percent, as if they’d been long-term investors.
These and other blessings are showered upon us by legislators in Washington who feel compelled to protect us, much as if we were spotted owls or some other endangered species. It’s nice to have friends in high places.
