Guest Blogger - Ms. Rachel Mumbert

Fear - fɪər [feer] –noun

1. a distressing emotion aroused by impending danger, evil, pain, etc., whether the threat is real or imagined; the feeling or condition of being afraid.
2. a specific instance of or propensity for such a feeling: an abnormal fear of heights.
3. concern or anxiety; solicitude: a fear for someone's safety.
4. reverential awe, esp. toward God.
--------------------------------------------------------------

Fear is the primary inhibitor of the expansion or development of the ideal.

It’s what gets in our way. So, we’re constantly fighting it. So constantly, in fact, that we can forget we’re doing it and be completely stunned when we find ourselves exhausted enough to forget our own names. We don’t realize it because it never ends and can become the constant setting by which we play out all other experiences.

You could study, capitalize on your knowledge and networks, fall in love, procreate, and advance small kingdoms all within the context and motivation of your fear – fear that you will at some point die, fear that you do not meet a standard or specification, fear that you will never beat Minesweeper on intermediate, fear of a greater being or overarching system like God and country, or fear of being overcome by something smaller than you – snakes, spiders, midget clowns, failing English 101, or not being able to fry a nice, even omelet.

So do we accept and embrace it like a bunch of tools or become worn down and completely overwhelmed with our dissatisfaction? Do we spend every waking hour on a lifelong treadmill trying to conquer it?

Do we let anyone bold enough to deny all of their fears take control of us (a few names come to mind)?

None of those are any more than a response to stimuli. None of them makes good use of fear. They only leave us tired.

Like every other phenomenon or experience, fear exists so we can apply it to our goals as individuals and as community.

We use it as a measuring stick for our resilience. We can use it as a motive, as a source of empathy – fear for others’ sake. We can use it to direct attention to the things that matter most. We can use it to prevent the reoccurrence of anything negative. Doesn’t much matter, as long as we put it to use.

“Men are moved by two levers only: fear and self interest.”
~Napoleon Bonaparte, everyone’s favorite stinky French general

“My ’fear'... is my substance, and probably the best part of me.”
~Franz Kafka, really old-school Czech author.

“No passion so effectually robs the mind of all its powers of acting and reasoning as fear.”
~Edmund Burke, pretty smart British guy

“There is nothing with which every man is so afraid as getting to know how enormously much he is capable of doing and becoming. “
~Soren Kierkegaard, Danish philosopher

And in closing,

“Fear is the mother of morality.”
~Friedrich Nietzsche, ridiculously famous German-Swiss Philosopher who may or may not have actually had a mother himself

Thought of the Day

When you observe art, you control it. You choose the level at which you accept its arguments. You have a conversation with it but on your terms.
When you connect with art you allow it to penetrate you. You accept it as a part of you and become it. You feel it as if it were a part of you.
When you create art, its quite the opposite. It consumes you. Your actions are nothing more than the means to its existence. There is no choice. There are no questions. There is only the way it is.

thought of the day

I refuse to grow up because I want to make sure I grow up right. I dunno if that makes sense to anyone but I've noticed far too many adults with juvenile tendencies that are ignored or accepted. Just feel like...my definition is not THE definition.

Fuck it while I'm on the topic of you, let me just go ahead and say that whoever cares to indulge in my words, I appreciate it.

When I started this blog, it was a place for me to dump my thoughts. I never thought anyone would actually take the time out of their day to type in this address or click the link to get to this site. I'm much more insecure than you probably think I am, and that's why a blog is the perfect outlet for my thoughts. But the fact that people actually visit makes me think I'm not as [crazy|fucked up|lazy|unfit for life|disproportionately maladjusted] as I think I am.

That being said, if you DO visit, whether I know you or not, I encourage you to comment (if you feel compelled, of course). I'll read it. I'm interested in what you think. Whether its something profound or mundane, I appreciate you taking the time out to respond.

Guess of the Day

Seeing as how this blog is named "Student of Life" - on the off chance someone actually reads this shit - I should henceforth rename "Thought of the Day" to "Guess of the Day." Because I am, as you are, simply a student in this world, raising our hands for questions we think we know.

But I like how "Thought of the Day" sounds.

Thought of the Day

Its best to think of your life as a series of ever decreasing phases until you realize all that matters is today, right now.

THE POWER OF ADVERTISING

one of the hundreds of future paths that i am currently considering is that of a graphic designer. I've always been enamored by a really good fucking advertisement, not in the sense that it made me want to buy the product, but sort of like an admiration of the effectiveness of the message. it's such a powerful tool

man – advertising is such dangerous territory. in one sense a really good ad can be almost exhilirating. like this one (admittedly i didnt really get it at first, but once it hit me – WOW) it's so effective, so elegant, not overwhelming but captivating

the simplicity of this concept is almost perfect. i've posted this ad before, and i think its fucking awesome, whether or not you agree with the message the creativity with which it has been transmitted is impressive.

but theres a potentially ugly side to it too. ads as effective as this do not speak to your conscious mind, they communicate directly with your subconscious. there is no dialogue, the average person doesnt have the opportunity to question the authenticity of the claims the advertisement makes, so in a deep way, we accept whatever the ad is telling us. its scary because we have to trust the ethics of the people who are trying to SELL something to us, which i need not detail how dangerous that can be.

but man – these are powerful images

and in the same way that one powerful image can become your truth, so can a barrage of bland images. its basically hypnosis. and tends to be the more devious campaigns - the assault mostly targeted on our women.

i've always had reservations about the field of marketing and advertising... I'm worried that working with such a monster long enough will turn me into one. especially if i get good at it. i enjoy the field but i don't respect it's intentions, and i dont want to become part of that monster, or worse yet, become that monster myself.

Still have alot of figuring out to do man. *sigh*

this is a really good read! i have come across this situation so many times

Being Opinionated

By James Garvey

Is being opinionated a virtue or a vice? Is it a good trait in a philosopher? I’m with Socrates in thinking that definitions really come at the end of an enquiry, not the beginning, so I don’t want to pin the notion down right at the start. There are, though, two philosophical types. One gets mentioned to prospective students in the promotional literature: philosophers are open-minded free enquirers, willing to question everything, resolute denouncers of dogmatism, pursuers of the truth, followers of arguments wherever they might lead — at this point you may wish to rise, stare into the middle distance, and allow the wind to blow back your hair. This creature is mostly fictional. Maybe it’s just our way of luring easy targets to introductory classes.

The other philosophical type, much more common, is the opinionated philosopher, the philosopher who is entirely convinced of her position, presuppositions, worldview, definitions, arguments, etc. Such a peron will fight her corner constantly, relentlessly, hammering all intuitions to fit her propositions. Counter-examples make no sense, other views are incoherent, objections unfounded, and on and on.

Who is the better philosopher? Different question: who is more likely to have tenure?

Zoom out a little and think about the wider world. Those of us with settled opinions are more likely to speak up, take action, and get results in line with our settled views than head-scratchers reading books in the shade of trees. The movers and shakers, if we still have those, are largely people who think what they think regardless. Flexible thinkers look weak by comparison. I’m told by friends in the states that opinions there are so entrenched and divided that rational debate is no longer possible. You get a view, a blank stare, and the opposing view, another blank stare and maybe an insult or knowing head shake, and on and on. How can reason get a hearing when opinion shouts so loudly?

Thought of the Day

It's crazy how one day I could feel like its over for me
and all my aspirations were pipe dreams
and the next I could feel like it hasn't even started yet
All it takes is a creative outlet
and a supportive environment to feel like I can do anything
It's unfortunate that we only get to taste that elixir once in a blue moon
so when it strikes, you strike
You strike and obligate yourself to continue striking
in the hopes that you can ride the high out,
produce as much as you can,
and have your obligations to keep you going
until you get the next sip
But until then, Jack Daniel's is a suitable substitute

"Erin Hanson’s 'Reminders' series is filled with flashes of our most unremarkable thoughts. Banal, boring, and inconsequential, like little snapshots of the things that run through our minds during a normal day and, more often than not, are dismissed and discarded before we’ve even had a chance to realize we thought them."

fuckin MUSE - Uprising

Dope idea of the Day

You know what would be really cool? Since the aroma released by burning certain herbs and spices may be somewhat conspicuous, those who choose to partake in said activities could employ what I would like to call the:

SMOKESCREEN 2000!!!!

which is basically a tent in your living area. It provides not only shelter from the discerning olfactory senses of the rigid outside world, but also a sense of privacy and intimacy for you and your friends in what can be an incredible bonding experience. Pillows, blankets, games, drinks, food, and music can be added to give it that special touch, and make it your own.

Works best especially for those living in an apartment.

Lighter sold separately.

EDIT: I just realized i totally stole this idea from native americans
