Grafitti writer SURE describing writing styles

SURE was recently killed in the line of duty in Afghanistan.

Written by his partner in crime, Faust:
"Sure was born and bred in Brooklyn and recognized for his exceptional handstyle which brought together elements of classic New York graffiti with ornamental calligraphy. His script signatures could be found throughout the city and were a major influence on myself and countless others...He was my partner-in-crime and my best friend. I am grateful for the time we had and that everywhere I go in New York City I see his name and know that his presence will be felt by many long after his passing”

Thought of You from Ryan J Woodward on Vimeo.

via conteanimated.com

Conte Animated is a personal project of mine that combines several art forms into one exhibition. These concepts include the following:

1.The exploration of the drawing the human figure in a variety of creative approaches. This stems from years of teaching creative gesture drawing.
2.2d Animation. This process of animation revisits the passion in my early career as a 2d animator. The illusion of life!
3.Contemporary dance. Although I am not a dancer, I appreciate the talent and dedication that goes into a beautifully choreographed piece. A graceful moving human form can communicate more emotion that any length of dialogue.
4.and finally, the exploration of experimental processes and concepts contributes to my own personal growth as an artist. Having worked commercially for years, this project has allowed me to stretch beyond my former understanding of art.

RHETORIC

I strongly believe everyone should be at least familiar with this concept, especially because of the extent to which it is manipulated and abused in media.
(all taken from Wikipedia)

Rhetoric is the art of using language to communicate effectively and persuasively. It involves three audience appeals: logos, pathos, and ethos, as well as the five canons of rhetoric: invention or discovery, arrangement, style, memory, and delivery. Along with grammar and logic or dialectic, rhetoric is one of the three ancient arts of discourse.

American Psychosis: What happens to a society that cannot distinguish between reality and illusion?

via projectworldawareness

The United States, locked in the kind of twilight disconnect that grips dying empires, is a country entranced by illusions. It spends its emotional and intellectual energy on the trivial and the absurd. It is captivated by the hollow stagecraft of celebrity culture as the walls crumble. This celebrity culture giddily licenses a dark voyeurism into other people’s humiliation, pain, weakness and betrayal. Day after day, one lurid saga after another, whether it is Michael Jackson, Britney Spears or John Edwards, enthralls the country … despite bank collapses, wars, mounting poverty or the criminality of its financial class.

I believe in life
I believe that the only way to create joy
is to juxtapose those moments with strife
I don't believe in eternal bliss
But that God is in us, through us, and around us
I believe we are here to simultaneously
birth the best and worst in the universe
and its up to us to perceive
our heaven or hell

The 1-Step Plan for Super Productivity

"When I interview creatives, I often ask them what advice they would give to the next generation, the up-and-comers. Curiously, there’s one incredibly important habit that nearly all of them possess that is almost never mentioned. So what is the secret ingredient in their productivity regime? It’s simple: They get up early."

So how can you become an early riser?
Getting up early is like most any habit that makes you a more productive creative: It’s hard at first. Here are a few tips to get you started:

1. Set an exact time to get out of bed.

If you normally get up at 11am, it’s unrealistic to start abruptly getting up at 6am. Think about what time you’d like to be getting up in the morning, and work up to it. Try to wake up 30 minutes earlier every week, until you get to the desired time.
2. Move up your bedtime in sync with the time you plan to get up.

Seven to eight hours of sleep is the recommended dosage for maximal productivity (with a few super-human exceptions). So if you’re getting up at 6am, you’ll want to go to bed by 11pm at the latest. If you try to go to bed at midnight and get up at 5am, you’re eventually going to run into some problems.
3. Get out of bed immediately.

The moment that you start procrastinating – read: hit the snooze button – it’s very easy to convince yourself of a multiplicity of reasons why you wouldn’t want to get out of bed yet. Don’t even allow those thoughts to kick in – just get up!
4. Expose yourself to sunlight.

Sunlight is key to adapting your circadian rhythms. If you’re having trouble getting up, don’t close your blinds all the way, so you have some natural light as your wake-up call. Once you’re up, a short walk (or run) outside helps reinforce the message with your body.

5. Develop a routine for your morning.

Whether it’s taking in the sunrise, brewing a cup of tea and reading the paper, or walking to the café down the street for a cup of joe, you’re more likely to continue to get up early if you develop a brief routine that is, in itself, a reward.

6. Stick with it.

Know going in that it’s going to take some time to adapt to waking up early – probably about 30 days. Don’t expect to feel bright-eyed and bushy-tailed from Day 1. But if you stick with it, getting up early is likely to become one of your favorite rituals.

Maybe it’s because he heard we have 18 delicious flavors of Classic Rice-A-Roni! It’s delusional thinking! And America is not alone with this sort of delusions. How to use your* prostitute. (*yes, you have one regardless of your sex)

I’m different. I’ve always been different, always felt different, but didn’t always have peace with it. Sometimes I fought it, bumped heads with others because of it, and even embraced it. It’s a sordid past I share with it. As I matured, though, I began to appreciate the fact that I was different. I eventually found it odd that most of us spend so much of our youth trying to fit in before usually spending the rest of our lives trying to distinguish ourselves. After all, aren’t we all different?

My official occupation for the past five years should read “nomad”. I’ve lived in New York, Philadelphia, Chicago, San Antonio, St. Louis, and even in an L.A. suburb. Right now, I’m on my way to South Korea. Each line of my resume places me in a different state and/or in a different industry so it’s quite likely that most companies seeking a long-term employee will immediately discard it upon review despite my qualifications; it doesn’t exactly scream company loyalty. Here’s the thing: I’m okay with that. Why? Because I’m different. That fact is evidenced not just by my thought process, hairstyle, interests or style of dress; my journey and choices are highly reflective of my individuality. My path hasn’t always been easy or glamorous, but it has been true to my essence as a free spirit.

Now that I’ve gotten that out of the way, here’s a little something else: you’re different, too. You have dreams you haven’t followed, thoughts you haven’t shared, passions you haven’t explored. In short, you have a life you haven’t lived.

1590s, "answerable (to another, for something)," from Fr. responsible, from L. responsus, pp. of respondere "to respond" (see respond). Meaning "morally accountable for one's actions" is attested from 1836. Retains the sense of "obligation" in the Latin root word.

The Giving Pledge

The Giving Pledge

The Giving Pledge is an effort to invite the wealthiest individuals and families in America to commit to giving the majority of their wealth to the philanthropic causes and charitable organizations of their choice either during their lifetime or after their death.

Each person who chooses to pledge will make this statement publicly, along with a letter explaining their decision to pledge. At an annual event, those who take the pledge will come together to share ideas and learn from each other.

The Pledge is a moral commitment to give, not a legal contract. It does not involve pooling money or supporting a particular set of causes or organizations.

While the Giving Pledge is specifically focused on billionaires, the idea takes its inspiration from efforts in the past and at present that encourage and recognize givers of all financial means and backgrounds. We are inspired by the example set by millions of Americans who give generously (and often at great personal sacrifice) to make the world a better place.

INSPIRED

My boss when I was at my AmeriCorps position has recently left IMPACT Silver Spring and is on a journey across the country.

It's a project he calls "Let's Teach Them All," the purpose of which being to gain a comprehensive understanding of education on the ground level, in all corners of this extremely diverse nation. An understanding that can fuel the closing of the Acheivement Gap, a residue of past injustices.

His blog, documenting his journey:
Let's Teach Them All

As I read through his last post, it made me realize something.

I see alot of people in the midst of some major change in their lives when I look around, especially those closest to me. The reasons for this change aren't always positive, progressive in inception. Change is being forced on many, and being forced by many others. And I see a HUGE spectrum of reactions to change. It's as if the entire fabric of reality is quaking beneath our feet. Some people are terrified, some are overzealous, nervous, hurt to lose all that they know, welling up with excitement for all they can gain.

It's so interesting to be surrounded by so much uncertainty, so many people wondering "what's next?" I just hope that those who are lost, are comfortable being so, and live life earnestly and honestly. Because tomorrow we enjoy the fruits of today's passion.

So here's to the sense of adventure, a sense of purpose, of hope, and passion for life, that maybe - had there not been change forced upon us - wouldn't be pushing us to be better, more aware, happier human beings.

And here's to you, Ray Moreno. Good luck on your journey, and I hope you know that your mission has inspired me, and hopefully I'll be able to pass that along to everyone in my life, especially those who need it.

Cheers

Life is a Chinese Finger Trap

I Don't Know

I don't know if I should be living my life this way. I don't know if I should be afraid of whats coming, or if I am ignoring things I shouldn't. If regret is going to sieze me one day, and cripple me. I don't know if I'm going in the right direction. Or if I'm making progress or not. I don't know where I'll be in 10 years. 5 years. 1 year. Or October. I don't know if I'm inclined in any way, towards anything, or I've skated by. I don't know if my life is an elaborate ruse, and I just really have myself convinced. I don't know if people see through it. I don't know if I'm being emo right now. I don't know why I'm not panicing. I don't know why I haven't shocked myself into change. I don't know if I already have changed. I don't know if I'm going backwards. I don't know if I'm growing up. I don't know if I should get back to acting like a child again, with all its purity and flaws and innocence and earnest, or grow up and handle all the things everyone expects me to handle. I don't know where to draw the line between living passionately and living selfishly. I don't know if people hate me. I don't know if people love me. I don't know if they should or shouldn't. I don't know if I'll be a household name, or be homeless. I don't know if I am going to help people, or feed off of people. I don't know if I'm doing anything right, and I don't know why I'm not working right now.

All I know is this shit is fucking confusing and God better forgive me if I mess up.

Etymological Background of the Day

In all honesty I think the etymology of words is so much cooler than just knowing the definition. I feel like understanding the root of a word, helps you understand the base reason for why it was chosen in English to signify whatever it's intended concept is, thereby making it much easier to FEEL the language and use it well. Instead of just memorizing fucking definitions.

So I decided to make an Etymologocal Background feature. I just got to think of a better name.

Without further ado:

integrity
mid-15c., "wholeness, perfect condition," from O.Fr. integrité, from L. integritatem (nom. integritas) "soundness, wholeness," from integer "whole" (see integer). Sense of "uncorrupted virtue" is from 1540s.

Race Shmace, Whatever (an article I wrote for Saaret's site "The Root" -- link, along with the other perspective at the bottom)

The situation is this: Two friends of mine; one white male, one black female. One very incendiary word. And the black girl wasn't the one who said it.

I watched the following exchange with nervous curiosity, my eyes flitting back and forth as if the two were engaged in an intense game of ping-pong. My white male friend had been standing there talking like the rest of us, peppering his speech with "nigga this" and "nigga that" as he joked and laughed.

"I'm going to need you to refrain from using that word," my black female friend announced. With a short chuckle of confused acceptance, my white friend agreed. And I breathed a sigh of relief.

FULL CIRCLE

In line with the ironic fashion this universe normally chooses to operate, my first post - the one that started this damn blog to begin with - popped in my head.

The post where I struggled to rationalize my internal feelings towards art, and match it up with the rest of the world, and see where it fits. How it fits. I was trying so hard to find some kind of connection, some way that everything made some fucking sense.

But those were just words.

A thought that would have temporarily turned my world upside down dawned on me:

I STILL have no idea what it means to be an artist.

But maybe I'm growing up, because I don't give a damn.
